Holistic Pain Relief & Wellness

We challenge conventional medicine approaches with alternative routes.

The Rod of Asclepius has traditionally been the symbol of scientific medicine. It symbolizes medicine dating back to ancient Greece

“You need this prescription pill…this invasive procedure…this surgery.”

“You’re in pain because of your arthritis/degenerative disc disease…herniated disc…spinal stenosis.”

“It’s all in your head…there’s nothing we can do.”

“You’re a medical mystery.”

“It’s just genetics.”

Karma Osteopathic is dedicated to anyone who has ever been told:

Our model at Karma Osteopathic ensures that patients get quality time each visit. We offer a holistic approach that combines the power of osteopathic medicine with alternative therapies to help restore painless movement and functionality.

Our Philosophies:

  • Find the Root Cause: we go beyond pain management to identify the underlying imbalances contributing to your discomfort.

  • Hands-On Healing: Dr. Barnum uses a variety of techniques like Neural Therapy (NT) and OMT (Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment) to restore balance and function in your body's systems.

  • Holistic Integration: we incorporate additional coaching in lifestyle modifications, biohacking, stress management, oral health, body mechanics, and fitness for a comprehensive approach to natural healing.

  • Receive a customized treatment plan that is personalized to your individual needs

Benefits

  • Feel empowered to take charge of your health

Dr. Frederick O. Barnum IV, D.O. is a double-boarded osteopathic physician who specializes in neuromusculoskeletal medicine. He uses neural therapy in his practice to help reset the nervous system in order to relieve pain and other body dysfunctions.

Focus Areas

  • You will learn about the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), or the “fight-or-flight” system that is responsible for mysterious symptoms that commonly do not respond to conventional medical approaches. Dr. Barnum educates patients on how the injuries/traumas/surgeries accumulated throughout a person’s lifetime can affect the body’s inherent healing mechanisms.

  • We work with patients who have struggled with pain lasting 3 months or longer, utilizing alternative approaches that do not involve steroid injections, invasive procedures or surgeries.

  • We treat patients who have been acutely injured/struggled with pain lasting 3 months or less. When addressed sooner, this not only helps people get back on their feet quicker, but can help prevent the pain from becoming chronic.

  • We team up with athletes of all levels, from professional athletes to young children. Dr. Barnum has helped many athletes return to play quicker and avoid long-term injuries.

  • A highly underdiscussed topic is how surgical procedures can create long-term trauma memory/restricted circulation to various parts of the body.

Dr. Barnum especially utilizes Neural Therapy to restore flow to surgical scar sites and prevent trauma memory in future scar sites. He combines this with OMT to further reset the nervous system and improve blood flow/lymphatic drainage.

  • We treat children of all ages, addressing head-to-toe bodily conditions as young as the first few days of life into the teenage years. Dr. Barnum utilizes Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment to accelerate bodily healing, disrupt/prevent pain, and correct postural imbalances.

He can also use Neural Therapy on older children to disrupt the most common injuries that can plague them into adulthood if not adequately addressed.

  • Also known as “muscle testing”, this eastern-style form of applied kinesiology can be used to help assess which injury/trauma/surgical sites are being prioritized by the “fight-or-flight” nervous system. This approach helps with diagnosing when a more “outside-the-box” location is disrupting another site (e.g., an abdominal surgical scar causing low back pain).

  • Did you know that pain and fear share similar connections in the brain? We will explore concepts like these together, as mindset plays a key role in bodily healing.

  • It wasn’t until Dr. Barnum learned about the field of Holistic/Biological Dentistry that he could not fully treat the whole person. Oral health can significantly affect chronic pain, organ/bone/joint health, and cancer.

We work in conjunction with holistic dentists to investigate mysterious cases that conventional approaches have not been able to solve.

  • We are here to debunk common myths about proper foot health.

In conjunction with Dr. Barnum’s unique in-office approach, you will learn about how to look for the proper shoes and make natural lifestyle adjustments so that your feet do not compromise your quality of life.

 FAQs

  • We are located inside Southgate Circle Wellness Center in Sarasota, Florida. Please enter through the front doors of the building. Karma Osteopathic Suite #2, located in the front right next to the waiting room (look for our sign on the door of the first room inside).

  • Utilizing the intake form the best way possible:

The most useful information for Dr. Barnum to know is the surgical/trauma histories, and what symptoms/conditions you feel.

When you think trauma, think about anything that your nervous system may have perceived as a significant shock to your body at any point in your life. Every single person has had trauma. When we say “the body keeps the score”, it means the subconscious brain can hold trauma memory in physical locations, even when the conscious brain wants to let go of it. Think of it as a protective mechanism from the primitive brain.

Imagine a body scanner running head-to-toe or toe-to-head; think about your traumas at each physical site (scars, emotional trauma at a site, hard hits, cuts, burns, infections, piercings, sensitive/numb spots, dental work, etc) & when they occurred. Any information you can provide helps us get to your root cause(s) quicker!

Please note that some trauma spots may come with memories/feelings of anger/sadness/fear/guilt/shame, and that is perfectly healthy to acknowledge…and could be a massive clue. For example, if you had a life-altering injury that negatively impacted you, this could be a great starting point for us with treatment.

Remember: pain is not always coming from where you think it might be! Your stories help Dr. Barnum think outside the box with you.

  • We recommend that you eat a well-balanced meal and adequately hydrate, but please do not overdo it. Gym clothes work well for visits. We will have patient gowns available as well.

Some people like to exercise/walk before visits to already be loosened and amplify certain treatments.

Most neural therapy injections are done very superficially with minimal bleeding. Dr. Barnum can apply gauze pads over the treatment site, but some patients prefer to wear red or black clothing to avoid any minor risk of staining light-colored clothing.

  • We can do one type of treatment or a combination of injections/manual treatment/cupping/or holistic education. During some visits, you may be feeling up for injections the entire time. With others, you may just want to relax and do only Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment, cupping, etc.

The first visit is crucial for reviewing the intake forms and patient history and getting to know the individual at a deeper level. We will come up with a custom treatment plan for you. We can also begin injection/manual treatment during this initial visit.

At follow-up visits, we will pick right up where we left off. Dr. Barnum wants to know your feedback after each treatment to help guide where to target at each visit. He will help you determine how many sites can be treated during each visit.

  • Depending on how long you have had the symptom(s), outcomes may vary. While some may notice instant change, others may experience soreness as their bodies are flushing toxins/lactic acid buildup through the lymphatic system. Each visit is driven by your feedback. The goal is to compare to what you have not been able to do because of the condition(s). If one approach does not make a significant change, we will approach it from a new angle. No two patients have the exact same treatment approach, because no two people have had the exact same injury/trauma/surgical history!

Similar to post-massage therapy, be sure to hydrate especially well in the first 1-2 days post-treatment.

Dr. Barnum encourages movement after each visit to facilitate better blood flow/lymphatic drainage (e.g., walking 20 minutes/day); however, do not “push through” any activity causing pain.

  • Given that insurance has its limitations, especially with more holistic approaches, we have decided to opt out of insurance all together. This enables us to spend 3-4 times longer with each patient and provide high-quality care.

However, Dr. Barnum still recommends that you have a separate Primary Care Provider who takes insurance for annual physical exams, screening tests, routine lab work, and prescription medication management.

  • We require a major credit or debit card on file. We do not charge until the time of your visit, so you may change your payment method the day of if needed. Any major credit/ debit cards or contactless payment methods (such as Apple Pay, Google Pay & Samsung Pay) are accepted. Keep in mind, there is a small added service fee with any card transactions. To avoid the additional service fee, we also accept physical cash, checks, and Zelle transactions (sent to heal@karmaosteopathic.com). *We do not offer change, so please bring the exact cash amount if you choose to pay with physical cash.

We do NOT take Venmo, PayPal, or CareCredit.

  • You will be charged a service fee of over 2.6% + $0.10 and per in-person credit/debit card transaction and a service fee of over 3.5% + $0.15 per manually entered transactions.

    For example:

    • If a new patient ($500 visit) pays by swiping their physical credit card during check-in, their total charge will be $513.45

    • If a new patient ($500 visit) no-shows, we will be entering a manual transaction with the card information we have on file. The total in these instances will be $518.30.

*** Take note: There is no processing fee with cash, check or Zelle transactions. If a new patient ($500 visit) opts to pay via cash or Zelle, they would pay the flat rate of $500. *Zelle transactions are sent to heal@karmaosteopathic.com through one’s bank's mobile app. ***

  • The pricing will remain the same regardless of when you arrive. We understand that life happens, but we want to respect each patient’s time and not cut into other appointment slots.

Dr. Barnum will not perform any procedures past the 30-minute (late) mark. Neural therapy especially requires adequate time, with each case varying due to complexity, location, size, age, trauma, the thickness of the tissue, and the patient’s pain tolerance.

  • We do not refund any no-shows. In the chance of a no-show, we will charge your card on file in full at the time of your appointment. If you need to cancel your appointment, we require a 1 business day notice.

*Please call the office for any cancellation or rescheduling requests during business hours: Monday-Thursday, 9am-1pm & 2pm-5pm EST. Call: 941-529-6750

*For any Monday appointments, you must call by the prior Thursday (1 business day) in advance, so that we may fill this slot.

  • No, we do not offer this style of service since every case is different. Some patients may need fewer visits than others to feel and see improvements in their health. Dr. Barnum’s goal is to decrease the frequency of visits as your symptoms continue to improve.
